Executive Officer, MCAS Futenma
Lt. Col. Cole Herron

LtCol Herron grew up in Sanger, CA and attended Sanger High School followed by attending College at the United States Naval Academy; receiving a BS in Computer Science.

2ndLt Herron was commissioned as a Marine Aviator and attended The Basic School in 2007 as a member of Echo Company. From March 2008 to December 2009 he attended flight school in Pensacola, FL and Corpus Christi, TX selecting to fly the UH-1Y upon graduation.

1stLt Herron completed training at the Fleet Replacement squadron, HMLAT-303, in 2010 and reported to HMLA-267. While assigned to HMLA-267, he served as the Ground Safety Officer, Future Operations Officer, and Flight Line Officer in Charge. He deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 2011 (OEF 11.2) and 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (WESTPAC 13-2).

In May 2014, Capt Herron reported for flight orders as an instructor at the fleet replacement squadron, HMLAT-303. While assigned, Capt Herron served as the Current Operations Officer, then the Assistant Operations Officer and received two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals for emergency actions in the aircraft.

In August of 2017, Maj Herron reported to HMLA-469 as the Assistant Operations Officer. He was selected as the detachment Officer in Charge of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit 18.1. On return from deployment, Maj Herron took the role of Aircraft Maintenance Officer and deployed in support of Unit Deployment Program 20.2.

In 2021 Maj Herron was selected for the Commandant’s Professional Intermediate-Level Education Board and attended resident Command and Staff College in Quantico, VA. Here he received a Masters in Military Studies. Following graduation from Command and Staff, LtCol Herron reported to Training and Education Command G-5 to serve as the Strategy and Plans Officer where he was the lead for TECOM’s Project Trident initiative until June 2025 when he reported to MCAS Futenma to serve as the Executive Officer.

LtCol Herron’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal-Strike Flight (6), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3)
