Lieutenant Colonel James J. Hurd

 

Lieutenant Colonel Hurd graduated from Colorado State University in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. He entered the Marine Corps in February 1992 through the Officer Candidate Course and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in April 1992.

Upon completion of training at The Basic School he reported to Pensacola, Florida for primary flight training in February 1993 and was designated a Naval Aviator in June 1995 at Naval Air Station Meridian, Mississippi. He then reported to Marine Attack Training Squadron 203, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, for transition training in the AV-8B Harrier II.

Following qualification in the AV-8B, Captain Hurd was assigned to Marine Attack Squadron 513 in Yuma, Arizona where he served as the Logistics Officer, Schedules Officer, Director of Safety and Standardization and Marine Aircraft Group 13 Landing Signal Officer. During this assignment, he completed a Western Pacific deployment with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard USS Essex (LHD-2) and participated in Operation SOUTHERN WATCH.

In June 2000, Captain Hurd was reassigned to Marine Attack Training Squadron 203, becoming an AV-8B Instructor Pilot. While assigned to VMAT-203 he preformed the duties of Schedules Officer, Familiarization Phase Head and Naval Aviator Production Planning Officer.

Major Hurd was then transferred to Marine Attack Squadron 223 in July 2002 where he served as the Quality Assurance Officer, Maintenance Officer and Operations Officer. In March 2003 he deployed with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit onboard USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) supporting Operation IRAQI FREEDOM and Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. During this deployment, he served as the Assistant Maintenance Officer for the Aviation Combat Element.

In January 2005, Major Hurd was reassigned to the Director, Air Warfare (N88) on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington, DC as the AV-8B Requirements Officer. During this tour he maintained oversight and responsibility for all procurement, modification, research, development, test and evaluation funding for the AV-8B aircraft. Additionally, he justified and obtained emergency supplemental funding.

He returned to Marine Attack Squadron 513 in July 2008 for assignment as the Executive Officer. While with the Nightmares he deployed to Japan in support of III Marine Expeditionary Force from August 2009 to January 2010.  In April 2010 he was transferred to Marine Aircraft Group 13 for duty as the Current Readiness Officer and in April 2011 he assumed the duties as the Marine Aircraft Group 13 Executive Officer.

In July 2012 Lieutenant Colonel Hurd reported for duty at Marine Corps Base, Camp Smedley D. Butler in Okinawa, Japan initially serving at the Operations Officer for the Facilities Engineer and then as the Executive Officer of Headquarters and Service Battalion.  Lieutenant Colonel Hurd reported to Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in May 2014,

His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (gold star in lieu of second award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
