AH-1Z helicopter to replace AH-1W on MCAS Futenma

7 Nov 2016 | 1stLt Joseph Butterfield, CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan Marine Corps Air Station Futenma

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION FUTENMA, Okinawa - The AH-1Z helicopter will replace III Marine Expeditionary Force’s AH-1W currently stationed at MCAS Futenma this week.

The AH-1Z “Viper” is the world’s most advanced attack helicopter. The AH-1Z has a 0.00 Class-A Mishap rate per 100,000 flight hours compared to the 1.76 Class-A Mishap rate of the AH-1W that it is replacing. The AH-1Z also features an upgraded landing gear, four-bladed composite rotor system and four-bladed tail rotor.

The aircraft swap is a result of the H-1 replacement program which replaces the UH-1N and AH-1W aircraft with the UH-1Y and the AH-1Z, the next generation of U.S. Marine Corps Utility and Attack aircraft. Marine Aircraft Group 36 currently has UH-1Ys stationed at MCAS Futenma. This swap will not result in an increase of aircraft on MCAS Futenma.

III Marine Expeditionary Force remains committed to the U.S.-Japan alliance by providing the most advanced variants of aircraft in the Marine Corps aviation fleet. The AH-1Z goes further and faster than its predecessor, allowing the Marine Corps to respond quickly in support of our treaty with Japan.
